Chemical Abortion: What You Need to Know

Considering the abortion pill? You’re not alone. Every woman deserves to be fully informed before making any decision about her body and her pregnancy.

Chemical abortion—commonly referred to as the “abortion pill”—involves a series of medications taken to end an early pregnancy. But it’s more than just a pill. It’s a significant medical event with physical and emotional impacts.

How It Works

A chemical abortion typically uses two drugs: mifepristone and misoprostol.

  1. Mifepristone is the first pill. It blocks progesterone, the hormone essential for nourishing the preborn child in the womb. Without it, the uterine lining breaks down, and the baby cannot survive.
  2. Misoprostol is taken 24–48 hours later. It causes contractions to expel the embryo and uterine lining.

When used together, these drugs are about 92–95% effective in ending a developing infant’s life (Danco Labs). If the abortion fails, surgical abortion may be required.

Risks and Complications

Chemical abortion is often marketed as safe and simple, but growing data shows otherwise:

  • 1 in 10 women experiences serious health complications requiring emergency care
  • Risks include severe bleeding, infection, incomplete abortion, and mental health impacts

These risks increase with advancing gestational age or lack of medical supervision.
